The Trend Of Tweeting Teens

As Twitter is winning the ‘likes’ of many teenagers to become one of the most preferred social networking sites over Facebook, marketers should start shifting their focus from Zuckerberg's prodigious child to the micro-blogging platform.

Tired of the dramas on Facebook, more and more teenagers are gradually flocking towards Twitter for updating their status. Teens are extensively using this micro-blogging site to either vent out their emotions or express their opinions.

In fact some of the teens have expressed that their enthusiasm of being logged on to Facebook 24*7 has gradually ebbed away. They feel increasingly irritated when their “friends” share dramatic and frivolous details about their day to day life. Moreover the endless ‘Farmville’ game requests have become a major source of annoyance.


A recent survey report from the Piper Jaffray revealed that about 26% of teens preferred Twitter while the popularity of Facebook is declining amongst teens with 23% claiming it to be their favorite social networking site.

Whereas previous reports stated Facebook’s popularity to be 33% as compared to Twitter’s 30%.

In spite of the survey results, Facebook still remains the top choice of marketers and advertisers when it comes to posting ads online.

Based on the 1.15 billion user base on Facebook as compared to Twitter’s 218 million active users, marketers are skeptical about committing their online advertising budget on Twitter. They are still waiting to see a broader and bigger base of active users before shifting their focus on Twitter as the key social networking site for posting ads.

According to analysts Gene Munster and Douglas Clinton of Piper Jaffray, Facebook’s smart acquisition of the photo and video sharing site Instagram is likely to add to its growth opportunity in the coming months. This is because a number of teens are smitten by the charm of Instagram. Plans of incorporating advertisements on Instagram might act as a catalyst to put Facebook back on top of the chart of most preferred social networking sites.

However brand marketers shouldn't take Facebook's preeminence as top social networking site to post ads for granted.
